14-years old Sohaib Ali was flown down from “Basti Zindagi” in Shah Ismail to Karachi, along with his father by Zindagi Trust. Sohaib’s backbone was severely crushed in the October 8th earthquake and he had not been able to receive proper treatments in the area to alleviate his pain. Sohaib, upon his arrival in Karachi, has been admitted at A. O. Clinic, where Dr. Shah will operate his backbone.

Setting long-term footing in the earthquake affected areas on North-West Frontier Province. Zindagi Trust today received a letter from the EDO Manshera for construction and operations of 4 schools that collapsed in the October 8th earthquake. Zindagi Trust team will now be opening 1 Girls’ Primary School and 1 Boys’ Primary School in Balakot, and one Girls’ Secondary School each in Dhariyal and Talhatta.

Zindagi Trust ‘Basti Zindagi” Village in Bhampora received the doctors from Red Cross, who visited the camp and provided vaccinations for measles and polio to approximately 255 children resident in the 70 tents in this camp.

UNHCR has informed that more than 20,000 people are expected to come down from the mountains in the next few days as extreme weather expected. 45-tent ‘Basti Zindagi’ was established as at Mari Khan Kheil (10-km away from Manshera). Additional “Basti Zindagi” clusters were established with 50 tents at Sarn village (20-km away from Batrasi) and with 40 tents at Gari Habibullah. Free transportation for establishment of all villages was provided by different organizations like IOM, SRSP, AL KHIDMAT, ATLAS LOGISTICS to Zindagi Trust.

“Basti Zindagi” has set foot in more affected areas, with the establishment of new tent villages in Shawaal Maidan (40 families), Taraang (50 families), Poro (50 families) and upper Kohali (34 families). In addition, to water-proof, winterized tents, these families have been provided with warm clothing, blankets, cooking utensils and food items by Zindagi Trust Relief workers.

Member National Assembly, Government of Pakistan, Mr. Shazada Gustap visited the Zindagi Trust “Basti Zindagi” in Bamphora where he distributed Rs. 2,000 per families resident in the 60 tents in the village.

Zindagi Trust team has identified more than 10 areas near Balakot and Manshera where both primary and secondary schools were operational before this catastrophic earthquake. Zindagi Trust team is now in process of establishing a permanent Regional Office in Abbotabad to coordinate the construction of these schools and to oversee their day-to-day operations.

Education and Health being Zindagi Trust’s core area of operations, our Field Team has started working from the base camp in Bamphora to identify areas where separate primary and secondary schools for girls and boys can be reestablished. The field officers are tasked to survey the community of Balakot and its surrounding areas to identify where and how many schools can be opened in the next 6 months.

Land for model “Basti Zindagi” was handed over to the army and the camp was relocated below the base-camp in Bamphora. Being next to a river bank, this camp could even accommodate cattle. The Zindagi Relief Team started working of establishing model villages, with toilets and space to families to cook and wash clothes. One tent in each village has been dedicated conduct 3-4 recreational/art classes for children of tent-village and surrounding areas. All materials (stationery, crayons, paints brushes, coloring and writing books, chart paper and markers) were provided to them.

Zindagi Relief Team spent their Eid in Balakot with the affected families. Sweets, chocolates, toys, biscuits, nimko, glass bangles, mehndi and shoes & socks was distributed amongst the children of the residents in the Zindagi Trust’s Bamphora Base Camp and ‘Basti Zindagi’ villages in Bamphora, Shawwal, Shah Ismail, Patlang, Mangg Hungrai and residents of Balakot living off the Zindagi Camps. Zindagi Trust simply wanted to make Eid a joyous occasion of children who have lost so much in the last month and deserved the best

Zindagi Trust has now embarked upon the “Earthquake Relief Food Project” where in coordination with difference organizations and individuals, Zindagi Trust would be providing both cooked food and rations on daily basis for the next few months to more than 100 families resident in Zindagi Trust “Basti Zindagi” villages in in Bamphora, Shawwal, Shah Ismail, Patlang, Mangg and Hungrai.

In the weeks following initial distribution of relief goods and first aid, Zindagi Trust Relief Team has moved its base-camp to Bhumpoora, near Balakot. The Zindagi Relief team, now working full-fledged with scouts from Pakistan Boys Scouts Association, has established tent clusters in Shah Ismailabad, Patlang, Mangg, Boi and Hangai – and a model tent village has been started taking shape in Showaal Maiden – where more that 50 families have already been provided shelter from the expected winter spell. To date more than 1,000 tents have been distributed by Zindagi Trust to the affected residents who wanted shelter on their own land

With other areas, village of Dharial in the outskirts of Shinkiyari and Mansehra was also badly hit by earthquake. Zindagi Trust team led by Patron, Lt Gen Munir Hafiez took a 2 trucks load of tents, food, blankets and other necessary and life saving items to Dharial. A proper system was followed to distribute the goods in an organized and disciplined fashion.

In association with the Hashwani Hotels, Zindagi Trust established Earthquake Relief Goods Collection points in the Pearl Continental Hotels in Karachi, Lahore, Rawalpindi and Peshawar. Shehzad Roy, President, Zindagi Trust went live on all television media to appeal to the residents to make the effort, and come to the booths to drop canned food, medicines, warm clothing, blankets, tents and even their cash donations, which Zindagi Trust would immediately transport to our Base Camp in Balakot.

In the aftermath of earthquake that severely devastated northern Pakistan, a second Zindagi Trust team left for Abbottabad with a team of renowned surgeons and anesthesiologists from Karachi. The purpose was to perform orthopedic surgeries on the victims with bone injuries. The team made its base at the short-staffed Frontier Medical College, Abbottabad. To meet the vast number of surgeries, the team of doctors also carried surgical instruments, implants and medicines from Karachi. The doctors performed and average of 10 surgeries per day (all major and definite treatment). These prompt surgeries saved the injured from developing gangarin and amputation. Other than the major surgeries, surgeons also performed 5 surgeries daily of medium nature.

Within 48-hours of the devastating earthquake hitting the Northern Areas of Pakistan, the Zindagi Trust Relief Team with more that 200 volunteers from different universities and accompanied by Shehzad Roy had set camp in Balakot – providing basic care package which included food, first aid, clothing, medicine to the thousands of affected people in the mountains surrounding Balakot.
