Annual Sports Day at Fatima Jinnah School
Date: 24/2/2012

SMB Fatima Jinnah Government Girls School held its annual Sports Day on the 24th of February 2012. Around a 1000 students from Class 1 to Class 8 participated in the event. The school believes that extra-curricular activities play a positive role in the schoolchildren, and sports in particular play the most important role in developing their character and grooming their personality. Children learn teamwork and camaraderie, as well as how to bear loss with dignity and patience through competitive sport.

This Sports Day was held with great fanfare. Parents of the students were invited to witness their children compete for the first time and their presence egged on the students to put on their best competitive step forward.

All the teaching staff – government teachers and Zindgi Trust project teachers alike – were a great support in making the event run smoothly. The sports teachers worked tirelessly to prepare the students for each competition. The buildup to the big event inspired the students to practice harder every day leading up to the competitions and their passion on the day was hard to miss.

The games were declared open with a recitation from the Holy Quran. Groups presented an impressive march past and salute. This was followed by a PT display, a cheerleading performance and taekwondo exercises. For students of Classes 1-8, races were held as well as a 4x100m relay race. Long jump, skipping race, frog race, and miscellaneous other contests were held. Prizes were awarded to students finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in each event.

Shifa Subhani, who demonstrated excellent performance in various sports and athletics events throughout the year, was awarded the Best Athlete/Sportswoman. She was delighted about the win, saying “I strived to participate and do well in pretty much every sport at school and I’m glad I played a part in helping my school shine.”

The colourful event came to a close with a vote of thanks and was enjoyed by all participating students, parents and teachers.
